A Call to Action: Rebuilding the American Spirit

Now just two weeks shy of a presidential election, the American people are making their political stances known. Either online, in person, or through a not-so-subtle campaign sign in their front yard. While the expression of opinion does indicate the workings of a healthy democracy, it can also lead to the emergence of bitter rivalries. In the case of Americans, people are turning against each other. Friends, neighbors, co-workers, you name it.

In a recent post on Twitter, Mitt Romney expressed his views on the state of the American political scene, referring to it as having “moved away from spirited debate to a vile, vituperative, hate-filled morass that is unbecoming of any free nation — let alone the birthplace of modern democracy”. These harsh, but fair words resonate more profoundly than ever before at a time when polarity seems to be the nation’s defining characteristic. In a period of such turmoil, Romney’s statement should be considered a call to action. A call for unity. A call to rebuild the American spirit.

At No Dem Left Behind, our goal is simple. To collaborate with Democratic candidates in rural districts and give them a chance to voice their ambitions free of bias and oppression. We know that working together is the best way to spark real progress in the face of national divide. As a country, we can do better to remember the values of the American way and re-establish a sense of unity. We can, and we must.
