Lacking Economic Relief: The U.S Government Fails to Provide the Same Support as our Neighbors to the North
No Dem Left Behind is a grassroots movement dedicated to getting Democrats running in deep red districts into Congress. Our coalition demands for the U.S. government to match the Canadian stimulus and financial relief for their citizens. Our coalition believes all Americans should be equally supported by our government as our neighbors to the North.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to devastating economic loss to Americans from coast to coast. The economic downturn over the past several months, led to:
❖ 36.5 million Americans filing for unemployment from mid-March to present
❖ Unemployment rate jumping to 14.7 percent, the highest since the Great Depression
❖ Nearly 80% of employed U.S. citizens were temporarily laid off
Similar to Americans struggling to make ends meet during such a turbulent time, the Canadian unemployment rate has jumped to a record 13 percent and more than one-third of the labor force didn’t work or had reduced hours in April. However, there is one key difference between the unemployment crisis in Canada versus America: Canadian citizens are receiving far more economic support from their government.
The Canadian government announced that they were disbursing $2,000 (CAD) stimulus checks once a month for a period of four months. In U.S. dollars, the estimated total payment for each Canadian is $5,600 (USD). To put that in comparison with the U.S. relief package, Donald Trump announced a one-time stimulus check of $1,200 (USD) in total. The average Canadian will receive $4,400 (USD) more than the average working class American. Some may argue that the discrepancy in relief packages is due to the differing population size of the two countries, where the Canadian government has higher stimulus to compensate for the smaller population. However, these individuals fail to consider how exponentially larger the U.S. economy is in comparison to that of Canada:
❖ The U.S. has a GDP that is nearly $19 trillion (USD) greater than Canada.
❖ The U.S. GDP per capita is 62,794.59
❖ The Canadian GDP per capita is 46,232.99
No Dem Left Behind calls for all Americans to receive equal economic relief, as the Canadian government provides to its citizens.
